Survey for Contacts

I am working on setting up a survey that is connected to the contact record rather than the customer record. I set up the custom record type with a field linked to contacts as the parent record. There are two things I am seeing that I am wondering if others have dealt with:

[*]I don't seem to be able to select the contact from the field with the url parameter. Adding "&custrecord1=billy%20bob" to the url causes the contact list to come up blank rather than selecting the contact record.
[*]If I leave the contact dropdown visible I can see that the dropdown does not have all the contact records. I'm guessing that if the contact specified in the parameter is not in the first part of the list it is not going to be found.
