List/Record Only See Internal ID

We have a custom record "MASTERS" which has a couple of hunderd pieces of equipment we use as a Master or Standard when we calibrate other companies equipment / tools.  We also have a custom record "EQUIPMENT" that list all equipment for a specific customer.

I need to add a list/record field on the EQUIPMENT record so that you can select which standard/master will be used to calibrate a specific piece of equipment - the selection needs to show the MASTER serial number.  The problem is the MASTER record is not dependent on a specific customer nor on a specific EQUIPMENT ID so I don't think I can set it up as a parent / child relationship.  I believe because of this (no parent/child relationship) I only can see the Internal ID of the MASTER record in the drop down list and not the MASTER
