Script to show ETA on item record from purchase order?

Wondering if anyone has a script/bundle already or suggestions on how to do this.

I want to show the ETA of out of stock items on our web site, so I was thinking of creating a custom field on the item record that would source the "receive by" date from the purchase order, if there is one for that item. I could then show the contents of that custom field on the site.

Has anyone done this?
