differentiating between "Non-Inventory Item" and "Inventory Item"

Is there any way to do this?

  I'm developing a new cell for an updated, web design interface.

  Inventory items that appear in categories would show their pricing, and an 'add to cart' button
  Non-Inventory items would show a short description, some tech information, and a 'view details' button

  Is is possible to write a script like this:

  if (item = "non-inventory item for sale") {
        only show this
  }

  else {
         show this
  }
