Beginner Customizations

Newbie alert!  I have a very general question around customizations that I am hoping someone can shed light on.  Are customizations such as custom fields, tables, or suitescripts automatically carried over to a new release of Netsuite?  Aside from testing are their any other things you would caution me on?  Thanks!
