Partial Deposit of Payment?

So,

I'm creating a Deposit on the fly ... however, I have a requirement that a payment may span several deposits.  In short, the same payment may get partially deposited over several Deposits.
I did some preliminary tests, and I cannot set the "paymentamount" value ... it throws an error on save.

I'm I in trouble here?  What other options do I have?

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!
