Matrix reports

I have been trying to create a custom report that will show customer, AR balance, by posting period. What I would like to do is have the posting period as a matrix item across the top of the report so we can see how much they owe by month. However, I cannot see what differentiates a standard column  from a matrix column. Any help, greatly appreicated.
