How to append name to client number in searches?

Hello,

When I look at some standard searches of clients, the client name is simply their number, say '501'. Yet when I customize the search, the name column seems to automatically append their name to their number, e.g. '501 John Doe'.

I have no idea what I'm doing to control that behaviour. I wish it used the latter format for the default lists as well, but how do I control that?
