Customer and Sales rep ordering metric

Hello,
I need a report that will show the total number customers for a sales rep and will also give me the number of times the customer ordered in specific time period.

I can do a customer search for the sales rep, and then do customer search grouped by sales rep, for each sales rep and for each month, but is there a more efficient way to get this information?
