Is Reports simply busted or am I just not getting this?

We have created a process where we create a sales order and identify it as an 'Eval' (custom field). We process and fulfill as usual in the system. To avoid problems with pipeline reports, we use a custom parent-child list field to identify the opportunity (opportunity list/record).

I can not run any report that will give me the information I need. I am trying to run a report that will show evals in the field. I can filter sales orders on the custom field 'Eval' and that works. But, I can not get information from the opportunity such as expected close date and opportunity title. The parent opportunity record is there including all the fields but none of these fields show any data in them when included as columns on the report.
