Using comments field as search criteria on a contact search

Hi, I'm trying to create a contact search with the contact comments field as a search criteria but am unable to locate the field in the drop down.  I know i can get it to appear in the results but would prefer to filter it first.  Doesn't  the contact search function have this capability or am i looking in the wrong place?
