Search by bulk merge

I am trying to do a very simple search for all customers who received a letter created for them through a bulk merge.  Searching 'Messages' does not work.  Gold Support have told me that it is not possible, but I just can't believe it.

Has anyone been able to do this?

[On a related note, why are bulk merge messages seperate from other messages anyway? What value does this have?]
