Item on Transaction Count - formula

i have been having alot of fun with the sql expressions in formula fields and wow, it has really opened alot of opportunities to streamline procedures and reports.
I am working on one now and i need a bit of help.  i simply want to have an item saved search that has a formula field that will count the number of times the item appears on a sales order in a certain time period.
The trick is, this needs to be an item search, not a transaction search.  i imagine the logic would be something like:

count of sales orders in which item x appears in the past 30 days.
