subtotals by month in reports

Is there a way to customize a report to subtotal by month. When selecting the "Add Grand Total" box on an amount field of the report...  the report then totals by days (presumeably because the due date is used in this report to sort on). Then a grand total is printed at the end of the report. What is needed is subtotals by month not days.  This is like a detail shipping/sales report that displays due date, item, qty, amount, and customer and then a subtotal on the amount field for the month.
