Joining Records

I'm generally interested in how to access and join records when doing saved searches. We've normalised our database and so have several layers of parent-child records which seems to cause problems as they aren't exposed like the top level record is eg the employee record might be able to see the project record but not a child of the project record.

So what are some ways you can do these more complex joins?

I'd much appreciate any help.
