Different sales reports do not show same total sales amount.

When I run an income statement, sales by customer and sales by item reports, I get different total sales amounts for the same period. There are no journal entries to sales. How is this possible? Every sale is processed to a customer with item numbers. Shouldn't all the report totals be the same? The sales by item shows all items, including freight and discounts.
