Adding to formula columns together in saved search

I have created this under Customization Search forum
Hi,

I have created 2 columns using Formula(Currency) option and have the desired results in 2 columns.

Howver I now want to add these 2 columns together and every combination I have tried fails

My 2 Formula(Currency) Fields are
case when {type} = 'Credit Memo' then {amount} else null end
AND
case when {type} = 'Invoice' then -{amount} else null end

Can anyone help on 2 points :-
1. Why using (case when {type} = 'Credit Memo' then {amount} else null end)+(case when {type} = 'Invoice' then {amount} else null end) does not work? Is it because I am adding a currency amount to a null and if so what is solution
