Previous sales report

Is it possible to build a report listing this weeks sales along with a column showing how many days since the customers most recent previous order (if any)

I've considered two options;
[1] Trying to create a formula to display this date
[2] Creating a self-populating "Days since previous order" field on the Sales Order - and then simply use this as source for the search.

Any suggestions?
