Historical Cost/Pricing Search

I'm trying to put together a search which will tell me the cost, price and margin of an item on a certain date. I'm assuming that I'm going to have to pull this information from the System Notes, but can't get my head around the logic to pull that info out. Is anyone using a similar search?
