Excluding Subtotals in Summed Searches

Does anyone know how to exclude subtotals from summed totals in searches.  For example, if I have a report for sales orders at the item level, but then summarized by Sales Rep and totals, how can I ensure that subtotals are not included in the summed totals.  When they are included, they overstate my totals.
