Cash Sales adding unexpected lines to searches

(Firstly note that I realize there is a Sales by Item report. I am making a saved search of it for other reasons)
A little history: For go-live, we decided that we were going to import some historical sales data. We did this by creating one cash sale for every month that we wanted to save. Each cash sale held the quantity of every item we sold that month (they're big cash sales). It all worked great.
Now, I am creating a saved search that shows quantity sold per item per month. I have included Invoices and Return Authorizations as the types of transactions to include in the search, but I realized that I could get monthly data for months prior to go-live by including the cash sale transactions. However, when I do, the report doesn't show an additional line for each month, but
