Why can reports pull information not available to access via saved search?

So management has requested to have available a list on the dashboard of sales rep activity.  The report "Sales Activity by Sales Rep" in pipeline analysis shows Emails, Tasks, Events and Phone Calls.

When creating an 'Activity' saved search, the 'Activity Type' only allows for Tasks, Events and Phone Calls.

Why can the report include Emails, but I can't pull them in via a saved search?

NetSuite support was unfortunately completely useless.
