Transaction Table?

Does NetSuite have a transaction table or separate tables for each transaction type?

We have a database consultant working on data extraction for a homegrown BI system. When he looks for transactions he only sees separate tables for each transaction type. From building saved searches through the UI, I had assumed that there would be a single transaction table and that Type was simply a field. He is seeing different tables for Sales Orders, Invoices, Cash Sales, etc. He is not an experienced NetSuite consultant and I don't know what tools he's using.
