Code examples for getting objects? Any code examples at all?

As a former Salesforce user, I am suprised about the complete lack of developer support.  If it exists, I have not been able to locate it.

Can anyone point me to a location with code examples or developer support?  Ideally a simple code example in .NET C# or VB that would retrieve a contact or some other item.
