salesrep woes

when i try to add a customer record with a salesrep, i get an error saying i don't have permission to, that it's available either only through adds or only through updates, or that an associate feature's disabled.

i'm using WSDL v2.0. i'm using the same code i always used to use, and it always used to work then. i retrieved an existing customeri made through the UI and mirrored it exactly (even using a salesTeam list), but i still get the same error.
