Update Custom Field

Could someone help me out with updating custom fields (for a contact record)?  I'm about 90% done with a project, but I need to update some custom fields and I can not get it to work:mad:
I'm a VB guy so if anyone has an example in VB that would be great. 

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm truely stuck!
