Multi-Select Field 40 Character Limit

We are attempting to import a custom record via Web Services.  All is well until we hit a value limit on the multi-select field:

"The field custrecord_mymultiselect contained more than the maximum number (40) of characters allowed"

At 6 characters per ID, plus 1 character for each delimiter, we hit the maximum at only 6 selections (41+ characters).

Is there any way around this?
