can't update checkbox

i have a checkbox on a custom record that i can't update. here's the error i get:

"The customfield [CUSTRECORD_BOOLFIELD] reference object does not match its data type."

error code: INVALID_CSTM_FIELD_DATA_TYP


does anyone have any insight into this?
