Using webservices to do a global search

Just to make sure I am not missing anything.. Is there any mechanism via webservices that allows us to do a global search on a term? One that returns a result set of mixed record types?  (i.e. if I search on on the term "Smith" I get a list of all companies that have Smith in their name, and a list of all contacts that have Smith in their name).

I don't think join searches work for this occassion..but would be happy to be proven wrong
