Searching Sales Orders by Alphanumeric OtherRefNum

I am trying to search Sales Orders by OtherRefNum (PO Number). This is a String field which contains alphanumeric values.

When I create the search TransactionSearchBasic.setOtherRefNum expects a parameter of type SearchLongField which means I can't search for alpha fields. Does anyone know how I might search for alpha fields?
