Access to AssemblyItem fields

I don't know if AssemblyItems are making it into the next WS version or not, but assuming they aren't...  Is there ANY way to get specific field values for an AssemblyItem?

For example, I need to get the weight field for a given AssemblyItem.  Any possible way?  hacks, tricks and ugly stuff welcome!
