Product Images

I'm trying to find out what the best way to get product images through web services would be. We're currently using 2.5 but I see mention of 2.6 supporting filecabinet? Sounds like it's where NS stores files of all types including product images, is that correct? If so then is our best bet to move to 2.6? Is there a way to do this using 2.5?
