Loading the items from a sales order

I've read the other posts, I know about bodyFieldsOnly.  Man!... does it slow things down (understandable)

I'm looking for a hybrid solution that would allow me to get the Sales Order collection (body fields only) and join the item records at the same time.  Is this possible?  I can't find any example doing this on the forums or in the docs.
