Custom Item Field Type Image

It is not clear to me what type to use to manipulate Custom Item Fields of type Image.

For the out of the box image fields, you simply use RecordRef()

For custom fields you would use something like StringCustomFieldRef()

What is the type for the custom RecordRef() / Image field?
