Shopper Join

I want to search for Invoices and Cash Sales of a certain item that were bought by customers NOT of certain customer categories.  I've tried doing this by attaching a shopper join to a transaction search. However, when the search returns, I still get invoices purchases by customers of those categories. Any help here?
