Error retrieving Sales Order in ASP.NET

This is an error I'm getting when I retrieve a sales order:

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

It's referring to this line:

<%=objRecord.paymentMethod.name%>

I'm pretty sure it's because that field is empty or non-existent for a certain record.  How do I deal with empty or non-existent fields in a record like that?
