Slow adding transacations

We are in the process of importing last years sales as cash sales.  Each transaction takes 10-15 seconds to add via web services.  Last year we had over 70,000 transactions, meaning this import could take over a week. 

Are there any settings for us to check to speed this process up? Is this normal? What takes so long?
