KitItem.weightUnit is a RecordRef - others are enum

I'm doing some work with pulling various items from NetSuite and while writing some translation methods I came across a strange inconsistency with the weightUnit property of KitItems.

InventoryItem, AssemblyItem, SerializedInventoryItem, etc, etc, etc all use the ItemWeightUnit enum for the weightUnit property.

Then KitItem cruises along with a RecordRef.
Why??
