Odbc Vs Ws

we being integrating some web apps inside our LAN using PHP and webservices. but webservices seem to be very slow (compare to other non NS webservices we access using php) I was wondering if anyone could say that NS ODBC access performs faster querying than WS? I understand that ODBC is for read only and it cost more but is its worth it because of this access speed?
