Web Service Search/ Create is Very Slow

Hi

am reading a excel file which has the customer data and create/update the customer records and relevant records(relationships)  using the  services.
but it took long time to create /update the records. (approx 1 minute for each record).


Can anyone give me some ideas how i can improve the web service request/ processing speeds?
