Sandbox vs Production Response Times

We are running webservices to create assembly items, create estimates, and to move estimates to sales orders.  Currently everything is running in the sandbox and we are seeing horrible response times.  It is taking close to 1 minute to perform any one of these steps.  The delay is definitly with the web services based on our application logging. 

Are these normal response times for sandbox?  I hope production is faster.  We are hoping for response times in seconds with production.  Is this a dream or will we see quicker response times in production?

What are average response times in production for those running web services?
