PHP new nsClient = slow

I think this was faster yesterday, but I'm not 100% sure.  At this point, though, this line in my PHP script I'm developing:

$this->nsClient = new nsClient( nsHost::live );

is taking 14 seconds to complete.  I don't think that's normal.  Any insights anyone can offer?
