webservices search questions

I have 2 questions on searching with web services via Java.  I am using 2009.2 of the web services.

1.  How do you order the results for a custom record search?
2.  How do you search for a field in a custom record that is a list of customer?  The id of the field is custrecord1?

I am getting an error of: 

org.xml.sax.SAXException: cannot add a null value to a list

which is absolutly meaningless.  Can anyone provide some insight?
