Custom record with state field on php toolkit

I have a custom record that has a field that is of the type state. I am using the php toolkit 2010_2 and cannot for the life of me get this one to work. The response I am getting back from the server is:

Invalid FieldName reference key CA

I have also tried a number Id, and the name _california. Has anyone gotten this to work? Be much appreciated any help.
