intermittent 'unexpected error' adding customers

I'm testing a data migration script with our netsuite sandbox.
I'm adding multiple customer records using addList.
I am seeing intermittent 'unexpected errors' when adding a small set of customer records.
I delete all of the added customers, re-run with the exact same data and they now work ok or different records get errors.

Does anyone know what causes these unexpected errors?
Or should I just expect them?
Is the Error ID useful in troubleshooting these?
I apologize for newbie questions.
