Saved Search Output Type

I have created a saved search and set it up on my dashboard using the Custom Search" portlet.  The output type on the saved search is grid but in the dashboard it shows it as a report - or with no lines or shading whatsoever.  Is this a bug or is there another way to format these searches in the dashboards.  It is very difficult to properly read the report without a grid view or some shading. Any help would be appreciated.
