KPI using the system notes date

I've recently begun setting up some custom KPI's but I'm stumped on one of them. We have a custom field on the contact record with called 'status' which has a list of statuses in it. I want a KPI which tells me how many of people were moved into a particular status - lets call it 'recruited' for last month and this month.
So I've produced a saved search that gives the result the important part of the logic was:
company is 'recruited' *we've setup a separate company to do recruiting through
status is recruited
system notes - field - status AND
