New Tabs help please

I have added a new tab for a custom role I created and the tab does show up just fine. All of the portlets pull through just fine as well. Here are my questions:

1. When I create/edit the new tab there is a subtab labeled "categories". Is that supposed to be the list that pulls up when you roll over the tab?

2. If not what are categories?

3. Where do I go to enter a list of links that I want to appear when someone rolls over the tab?

4. I have created links from going to setup > customization > center links thinking they are what would appear under the tab. Is that where they appear? How do you get them to appear?
