Updates to Published Dashboards

Hi there,
I've published several dashboards for various roles and have a few updates to them. If I add an additional portlet, but the dashboard doesn't look exactly like the one originally published, will it be overridden? Do I have to rebuild the original dashboard with the new portlet to publish?
