Help with Item status in Sales Order

Is there any way to incorporate a "Qty on Order" column in the Item section of a Sales Order? It would be helpful to be able to tell a customer on the phone that their item is backordered, but there are XXX on order. The only way we see to do this now is to take the additional steps of going to an item record to see the quantity on order.
